This blog is based youtube post - Why Do People From Big Cities Choose Bali? "Street Interview"

Sometimes people come to Bali after months of planning. They search for beaches, temples, cafés, and the perfect sunset.

But for one sailor from South Korea, Bali was never part of the plan.

He works on cargo ships that travel between Singapore and Australia. The ocean is his workplace, and ports around Southeast Asia are simply part of the route. Bali was just another place along the way — until something unexpected happened.

Halfway through the journey, he suddenly got sick.

The situation was serious enough that he had to leave the ship and recover on land. The nearest place where he could rest and receive treatment was Bali. Instead of continuing his voyage, he found himself staying on the island to recover.

It wasn’t the kind of arrival most travelers imagine.

Yet sometimes the most memorable experiences happen when life changes our plans.

A Different Kind of First Impression

For many people in Bali, tourists arrive excited and ready to explore everything at once. But his first days were different. His priority was simply to rest and recover.

Still, even in that situation, Bali slowly began to reveal itself.

The warm air felt very different from home.

In South Korea, winter had made everything cold. But here, the weather was hot, the sea was close, and the rhythm of the island felt relaxed.

And of course, there was food.

One of the first local dishes he tried was nasi goreng.

Sometimes small moments like that become the first real connection to a place.

When Plans Change

Originally, he had actually hoped to visit Bali someday with a friend. But life had other ideas. Instead of arriving as a tourist, he arrived as someone who simply needed time to recover.

Yet that unexpected situation gave him a new perspective.

“I’m not a tourist… I’m a sailor.”
“I had to stop here because I got sick.”
“This is my first time in Bali.”

Even though Bali was not part of his travel plan, it became part of his life story.

Bali Is a Place Where Stories Happen

What makes Bali special is not only the beaches or temples. It’s the people and the stories that pass through the island every day.

Some visitors come for vacation. Some come for work. Some arrive by accident.

And sometimes, even a sailor traveling across international trade routes can suddenly find himself experiencing Bali for the first time.

“I will probably just follow my friend around Bali.”

He doesn’t know exactly where he will go yet. Maybe a temple, maybe a beach, maybe somewhere his friends recommend.

But that’s the beauty of Bali.

You don’t always need a perfect plan.

A Message for People in Bali

For many locals, Bali can sometimes feel like a place that belongs mostly to tourists. But interviews like this remind us of something important.

People from all over the world pass through Bali for many different reasons.

Some come to celebrate. Some come to work. Some come to heal.

And each person leaves with their own story.

Bali is not only a destination.

It’s a place where unexpected moments become memories.

And sometimes, even a sailor who never planned to visit Bali will end up discovering it in his own way.
