He Came to Surf. Bali Kept Him.

They didn’t come to Bali to start a new life.

They came for waves.

On a regular surf trip, like many others do. Sun, boards, blue water, good wind. Simple plan. Go home after.

But Bali had other plans.

When we met Wales and Alex in Sanur, they told us something that might surprise many locals: They’re not tourists. They’ve been living here for almost four years.

From the United States and Australia to Bali and not in a dramatic, cinematic way. Just… naturally.

“Bali kind of chose me.”

He came for surfing. He ended up finding a job. And then he stayed.

No big life strategy. No master plan. Just opportunity meeting timing — in Bali.

Bali as a Home Base

They travel around Indonesia. They’ve surfed in different places. When asked about their favorite waves, they mentioned Mentawai perfect barrels, clear reefs, island sets.

But when it comes to living?

Bali is home base.

“Bali’s home base.”

There’s something powerful in that sentence.

Not “Bali is cheap.” Not “Bali is easy.” Not “Bali is trendy.”

Home base.

That means comfort. Community. Work. Daily life. Routine. Growth.

For many Balinese people, Bali is simply where we were born. But for them, Bali is a place they consciously chose to build life around.

It Started With Wind and Waves

On the day we met them, they weren’t even surfing their “favorite” spot. They were there because the wind conditions were better.

“It’s more the wind… it’s very windy over Uluwatu.”

That detail matters.

They’ve learned the island. The seasons. The direction of the wind. The rhythm of the ocean.

Bali is not just a backdrop for their Instagram. It’s a place they understand.

Experience builds attachment.

Bali Is for Everyone

For many locals, there’s sometimes a quiet question:

“Why do so many foreigners want to stay here?”

Listening to their story, the answer feels simple.

Bali offers space. Opportunity. Nature. Community. A slower rhythm. A chance to start over without pressure.

He didn’t come here chasing luxury. He came chasing waves.

And somehow, in that journey, he found work, stability, and belonging.

“I was just here on a surf trip… and then I ended up finding a job. So I stayed.”

There’s no fear in that story. No complicated visa talk.No dramatic escape narrative.

Just life unfolding.

For Us, As Balinese

Sometimes we only see Bali through problems: traffic, development, crowds.

But through their eyes, Bali is:

  • A place worth relocating for

  • A base for exploring Indonesia

  • A space where careers can start unexpectedly

  • A community built around passion

And maybe that’s something we shouldn’t forget.

Bali is not only for tourists. Not only for expats. Not only for influencers.

Bali is for surfers. For workers. For dreamers. For people who accidentally fall in love with the island.

Bali is for everyone.

And sometimes, the people who come “just for a trip” end up reminding us how special home really is.
