Bali Feels Like Home to More People Than We Realize

This blog is based on the youtube post - Is Bali Just Cheap Souvenirs & Parties? "Street Interview"

At Mengiat Beach, we met an Australian family who had already spent more than two years living in Bali. What started as a casual beach conversation slowly became something deeper, a reminder that Bali is not just a holiday destination for many people anymore. For some, it becomes part of their everyday life.

The father joked about skinny dipping with fishes, sea urchins, and chaotic Bali traffic, but underneath the humor was something honest: Bali had become home for their family.

One thing that stood out was how naturally their child explored the beach environment, finding sea urchins, observing animals, and treating the beach like a giant playground instead of just a tourist attraction. It showed how Bali gives different experiences depending on how people choose to live here.

One of the most interesting moments came when they talked about places they would recommend to friends visiting Bali. Surprisingly, they didn’t immediately say Canggu.

“Everyone thinks Canggu is a vibe… but it’s not a vibe.”

That quote felt surprisingly honest. Not because Canggu is “bad,” but because it reflects how every visitor experiences Bali differently. Some people come to Bali looking for crowds and nightlife. Others fall in love with nature, cooler mountain air, quiet beaches, or simple family moments.

And maybe that’s one of Bali’s biggest strengths: there is no single “correct” Bali experience.

Another beautiful thing about this conversation was how normal and relaxed it felt. No luxury lifestyle. No influencer energy. Just a family enjoying the beach together after living here for years.

For many locals in Bali, it can sometimes feel easy to assume tourists only come for parties, beach clubs, or cheap holidays. But conversations like this remind us that many visitors genuinely appreciate the island in deeper ways, the nature, the slower pace, the family-friendly environment, and even the everyday routines.

Bali continues to attract people from completely different backgrounds:families, backpackers, retirees, digital nomads, surfers, nature lovers, and people simply looking for a different rhythm of life.

That’s what makes Bali feel universal.

Not everyone comes for the same reason. But many leave with stories they never expected to have.

And perhaps that’s why people keep returning.

“For families, yeah… this is one of the best beaches.”

This is Part 2 of our Bali street interview series, featuring more real conversations and experiences from people visiting and living in Bali.
